The novel Trash is more than just a fictional story about some young boys, but it is a The Reality of Povertyrepresentation of a world which is suffering from poverty and struggling to survive. This story depicts life on the dumpsites – by far it is not an easy lifestyle nor a pleasant and rewarding one. Third world issues such as starvation, sanitation, and health problems are taking lives daily. Children are being stollen of their childhood and forced to work in hash, unforgiving environments simply to provide for the rest of their family. Even the lucky are living on less than $1.25 a day. Thus, these are only a few factors affecting more than 1/3 of the world’s population as people are covered by the immobilising hand of poverty.

The fact that you are reading this right now puts you in a position to make a difference! Compared to these people all over the world struggling to survive, we are privileged. We have resources to make life liveable and we have a roof over our heads. We have been blessed with food and clean water, education and doctors – we are living a life in a position to change someone else’s nightmare into a dream. You may be young, you may be old, but this issue is not too big for you to do something about. Become passionate, discover the ways in which you can help, and partner with others to impact this struggling world – seriously, you can make a difference! Do something today… the world is waiting.

  1. There is actually a non-profit named “Trash Mountain Project” that goes to these locations and helps these people. They help them get the physical, emotional and spiritual needs met and then help them become sustainable on their own by educating them, teaching them skills, teaching them how to grow their own food, etc…
